AmeriCorps VISTA Opportunity

Benefits

  • Gain great work experience (depending on your interests and skills) working in one or more of the following areas: marketing, fundraising, special event planning and leadership, team-building, data management, volunteer recruitment, volunteer management, community development, writing newsletters (online & mail), grant writing, public speaking, parent involvement, resource coordination, social services, family support and referrals, community leadership and developing positive agency partnerships throughout Nassau County. (Job assignments will be made based on skills matched to the areas listed above)
  • A living allowance of $927/month (only Federal taxes taken out)
    • As a Volunteer you are provided a "living allowance" not wages
    • No part of this allowance will prevent continuation of any other current government payments or subsidies and is not counted against disability or social security payments
  • Fully paid basic Health Insurance for all full-time VISTA members
  • Up to $400/month childcare-reimbursement; if you qualify
  • A $5,275 tax-free Education Award at the end of the year to use for any type of additional graduate school, college or technical training OR may be used to pay off student loans. Or, in lieu of the scholarship, VISTA member may choose a $1,500 cash stipend; paid at the end of a successful year of service. No pro-rated Education Awards or stipends are provided for members that don't complete a full year of service.
  • 10 days of personal leave and 10 days of medical leave per year
  • Mileage reimbursement for work-related travel

Requirements

  • At least 18 yrs old — no upper age limit
  • A minimum of a High School Diploma/GED — a college degree is preferred or at least some college (additional education and skills will increase the level of assignments)
  • Initiative, flexibility, and organization — skilled in both written and oral communication – Microsoft Word and Excel skills very helpful – and a willingness to help others and work positively and constructively as part of a team are critical
  • A place to live in Nassau County and reliable personal transportation
  • Drug-Free and able to pass a Level 2 FBI background check
    • Be a United States citizen with a birth certificate and/or valid U.S. Passport.
  • Willingness to commit 12 months as a VISTA Volunteer working 35-40 hrs/wk on average -VISTA Volunteers are not allowed to work elsewhere or attend school during their VISTA assignment unless they are taking a class recommended and paid for by their CIS assigned office.
